Updraft gasifiers are probably the most simple and yet when made properly, the most efficient type of gasifer. I like to jokingly call them a fire in a barrel, because that's what they appear to be. A bucket is filled with fuel, and the top layer of fuel is lit on fire. Air is pulled in through holes at the bottom and up through the fuel by the natural draft of the fire. Once it reaches temperature the fire on top will be no more than a bed of hot coals. Wood gas will rise off the fuel to the lip of the bucket where it burns off with the excess of oxygen outside of the bucket.
